Questions and answers

How many road sign groups are there?

9

Norway has nine road sign groups. Each group has its own hundreds series in the sign number: warning signs are the 100s, give-way and priority signs the 200s, and so on to marker signs in the 900s.

The division comes from the sign regulations (skiltforskriften), where each group has its own chapter. Know the group and you know a lot about a sign before you read it – its shape and colour tell you what kind of message it gives.

Shape and colour tell you the group

  • Warning signs (100): a triangle pointing up, red border, yellow face. They warn of a hazard.
  • Give-way and priority signs (200): their own shapes, such as the inverted triangle and the octagonal stop sign. They decide who goes first.
  • Prohibitory signs (300): round with a red border. They forbid something.
  • Mandatory signs (400): round and blue with a white symbol. They require something.
  • Information signs (500): rectangular, often blue. They inform – but many of them switch on a rule.
  • Service signs (600): blue with a white panel. They show where to find services.
  • Direction signs (700): show the way, and the background colour tells you the type of road.
  • Supplementary signs (800): the small plate under a sign, adding to or limiting it.
  • Marker signs (900): show where the road goes or mark obstacles.

Why the groups help on the theory test

Many sign questions are not about remembering one particular sign but about recognising what kind of sign it is. A round sign with a red border forbids, a round blue one requires – and that often decides the right answer. See every road sign, group by group, or take a free theory test.

Frequently asked questions

Are road markings a sign group?

No. Road markings and traffic lights have their own chapters in the sign regulations and are not counted as sign groups.

Which sign group is the largest?

Information signs (the 500 series) have the most signs, give-way and priority signs (the 200 series) the fewest.

What does the number on a sign mean?

The first digit is the group: 1 for warning signs, 2 for give-way and priority signs, and so on up to 9 for marker signs.
