Prohibitory signs
Round signs with a red ring. They forbid something — and the real question is almost never what is forbidden, but where the ban starts and where it ends.
Where the group sits in the regulations
The group holds 47 signs and is governed by chapter 4 of the Norwegian sign regulations: the general provisions in § 7, and the individual signs in § 8.
Round means rule, not warning
Prohibitory signs are round with a red ring. Where a warning sign warns, these forbid: you may not. Speed-limit signs belong to this group, which is worth noticing — a speed limit is legally a prohibition on going faster, not a recommendation of how fast to drive.
If there is doubt about who the ban applies to, the answer is on the supplementary plate. A ban can be limited to one class of vehicle, to certain hours of the day, or to a stretch of stated length.
Where the ban begins and ends
A prohibitory sign applies from where it stands, not from where you notice it. That is the rule behind most theory-test questions about this group.
Where it ends depends on the kind of ban. Some are lifted by their own end-of-restriction sign, some by the next junction, and some run until another sign says otherwise. Knowing which of the three applies is what separates a correct answer from a plausible one.

No entry 302It is prohibited to pass the sign in the direction of travel. The sign is used, among other things, on one-way streets where entry from that end is not allowed.

No overtaking 334It is prohibited to overtake motor vehicles with more than two wheels. The prohibition applies until it is lifted.

Speed limit 362It is prohibited to drive faster than the speed indicated on the sign. The speed limit applies until it is lifted or changed.

Does a prohibitory sign apply from the sign or from where I see it?
From where the sign stands. That is why a sign can be posted immediately before the place the ban covers, without giving you any run-up.
Is a speed limit a prohibition?
Yes. The sign forbids you from driving faster than the number. It says nothing about that speed being safe — you must still drive according to conditions, which may require far less.
