What the test consists of

The class B theory test (teoriprøven) is a multiple-choice test you sit at Statens vegvesen. It has 45 questions, you get 90 minutes, and the pass mark is 38 correct — about 85 per cent. You answer one question at a time and can move back and forth before submitting.

Statens vegvesen publishes which seven themes the test covers, but not how many questions each theme gets. The mock exams here draw from those same seven themes, weighted towards right of way and signs & road markings — that is our own estimate rather than an official distribution, but they are the two topics people struggle with most.

The test is not easy: in 2025 only 60 % of theory tests for a car were passed, according to Statens vegvesen. See how many pass the theory test, year by year and by age.

The topics you are tested on

The syllabus covers seven main topics: right of way, signs and road markings, speed and positioning, laws and rules, driver and owner responsibility, the vehicle, and the driver and other road users. The question bank here holds 1480 questions across those topics, each with an explanation of why the answer is right.

If a topic feels shaky, read the chapter before drilling it. Taking mock exam after mock exam without reading is the most common reason people plateau in the low thirties.

A practice plan that works

Read the chapter, drill the topic, sit a mock exam — in that order. The theory course here has 22 chapters and 58 lessons with 143 hand-drawn diagrams, and every chapter links on to the topic practice that belongs to it.

Once you score 38 or better on two or three freshly randomised mock exams in a row, you are effectively ready. One good result can be luck; three in a row is not.

Where you sit the test, and what happens next

You book and sit the theory test itself at Statens vegvesen, at a traffic station (trafikkstasjon), and you pay a fee for each attempt. VeiMester does not administer the test and is not affiliated with Statens vegvesen — everything here is practice material. The test is offered in several languages, English among them, and all the content here exists in both Norwegian and English, so you can practise in the language you will be tested in.

A passed theory test is valid for three years. If you do not manage the practical driving test within that time, the theory has to be retaken. If you fail, you must wait two weeks before a new attempt — there is no cap on attempts, but the fee applies every time, which is why it pays to practise until you are hitting 38 out of 45 consistently before you book.

Booking, test day and the result

You can sit the test from six months before you turn 18, once your licence application is approved on Din side at Statens vegvesen and your record has been checked. You book there too, choose the traffic station yourself, and pay NOK 480 per attempt (prices from 1 February 2026) – see what the theory test costs. You do not need to have finished driver training first.

On the day, bring valid ID; the photo for your licence is taken in a booth at the station for NOK 100. You answer on a computer in a room with others, a dictionary is allowed, and the result appears on screen the moment you submit. You start free with an account: one fixed 45-question mock exam, chapter 1 of the theory course, and a fixed sample of questions in the two biggest topics. Full access opens the whole course, freshly randomised mock exams, all topic practice and the entire signs section — 149 kr for a week or 199 kr for a month, as a one-time payment by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna. How long should I practise before the theory test?

It varies, but a useful bar is scoring 38 or better on three randomised mock exams in a row. At that point the result is not luck.

Are these the same questions as the real test?

No. The real exam questions are confidential and are not published anywhere. Every question here is written by us from public sources — the class B curriculum, the traffic rules, the Road Traffic Act and the sign regulations — and each one cites the provision it rests on.

Can I take the Norwegian theory test in English?

Yes. Statens vegvesen offers the theory test in several languages, including English. Everything here exists in English too, so you can practise in the language you will be tested in.

Do I need an account to practise?

To practise, yes — a free account opens the fixed mock exam, the first chapter of the course and a sample of topic practice. The front page and the driving-school map are open to everyone.

Is there a student discount?

Yes — 15% off whatever the price is when you buy, so 169 kr for a month instead of 199 kr. You confirm it with the email address your school gave you, and upper secondary counts exactly as much as a university. Payment is never blocked while you confirm.

Where do I take the theory test?

At Statens vegvesen, at a traffic station (trafikkstasjon). You book the slot yourself and pay a fee per attempt. VeiMester does not administer the test and is not affiliated with Statens vegvesen — we are practice material.

How long is a passed theory test valid?

Three years. If you do not take the practical driving test within that period, you have to sit the theory test again.

What happens if I fail?

You wait two weeks, then book a new test. There is no cap on the number of attempts, but you pay the fee every time — so spend the two weeks on the topics you got most wrong before booking again.
