How much does the theory test cost?

NOK 480

The theory test costs NOK 480 per attempt at Statens vegvesen. The price is the same for every licence class and applies from 1 February 2026.

Fail, and you pay NOK 480 again – and wait at least two weeks. It is the smallest fee on the way to a licence, but also the one many people pay more than once.

Prices from 1 February 2026. The driving school and the compulsory courses come on top and vary between schools.

What the fee covers

The fee pays for the test itself at Statens vegvesen: 45 questions in 90 minutes at a traffic station. It is the same for a car, motorcycle, moped or heavy classes.

Everything else you need to pass – courses, books or online practice – you pay for elsewhere. The practical test fee depends on the class; for a car it is NOK 1,490 booked online.

No-shows are charged

You must pay for tests you do not turn up to, and for tests cancelled later than the second-to-last working day before the test. The exception is if you were under 18 when you booked.

So if you are not sure you are ready, move the test in good time – not the day before.

The cheapest way to pass

The real cost is not the fee but another attempt: NOK 480 more, at least two weeks' wait and often a later practical test. In 2025, 40 in 100 theory tests for a car were not passed, according to Statens vegvesen.

The surest saving is knowing you are ready before you go. Take a free theory test in the real format – 45 questions, at most 7 wrong – and see where you stand.
