Questions and answers

How many driving lessons are compulsory for class B?

34 lessons

There is no minimum number of ordinary driving lessons. What is compulsory is three courses of 34 lessons in total – the basic traffic course (17), the safety course on a track (4) and the safety course on the road (13) – plus two step assessments of 45 and 60 minutes.

Everything else is up to you: how many lessons you take at a driving school and how much you practise privately. The regulations set goals for what you must be able to do, not how many hours it takes.

The compulsory parts, step by step

  1. Step 1
Basic traffic course – 17 lessonsFrom 15. First aid, night driving and being new in traffic. Must be done before you practise driving.
  2. Step 2
Step assessment – 45 minutesA talk and a drive with your instructor near the end of the step: are you ready for traffic training?
  3. Step 3
Safety course on a track – 4 lessonsOn a training track: securing people and load, and two lessons of practical driving. The step ends with a 60-minute step assessment.
  4. Step 4
Safety course on the road – 13 lessonsRisk, country-road driving, driving in varied traffic and reflection. Then the theory test and the practical test.

Why there is no minimum

The driver training regulations describe what you must be able to do after each step – for example to drive clearly, safely and independently in varied traffic – not how many hours it should take. For step 4 they say you take the safety course on the road and must also have sufficient practice.

That is why the number of lessons varies so much between learners. Someone who has practised a lot privately needs fewer school lessons than someone who has hardly driven.

A step assessment is not an exam

A step assessment is a talk before and after a drive, where you and your instructor judge whether the goals of the step are met. The instructor gives a recommendation, but you cannot fail. The one in step 2 lasts 45 minutes, the one in step 3 60 minutes.

Using your lessons well

  • Practise a lot privately between lessons – volume is what builds confidence.
  • Take the safety course on the road near the end, when you already drive independently.
  • Read the theory alongside: much of what the instructor corrects is a rule that also comes up on the theory test. Take a free theory test and see where you stand.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take the practical test without ordinary school lessons?

Yes, as long as you have done the compulsory courses and step assessments. The rest can be private practice – what matters is that you drive well enough on the test.

Can I fail a step assessment?

No. The instructor gives a recommendation on whether you are ready for the next step, but the assessment is not a test.

Are the courses the same for a motorcycle?

No. Motorcycles have their own compulsory courses for each class, but the basic traffic course is the same.
