The Norwegian motorcycle theory test – classes A1, A2 and A

One test for A1, A2 and A
A motorcycle licence is three classes but one theory test. Your age and how powerful a machine you want to ride decide the class – the theory test is the same whichever it is, and you may sit it at the earliest six months before you reach the minimum age for the class.
- A1 – light motorcycle: max 125 cm³ and 11 kW, from 16
- A2 – medium motorcycle: max 35 kW, from 18
- A – heavy motorcycle: no power limit, from 24, or from 20 after two years on A2
What the test asks
The test covers the same seven main themes as the car theory test: right of way, signs and road markings, speed and positioning, laws and rules, driver and owner responsibility, the vehicle, and driver and other road users. The questions are asked from the saddle, though: lane position, where you look, grip, braking, protective gear, passenger and load.

How to practise
Read the chapter, practise the theme, sit a mock exam – in that order. The motorcycle theory course has 19 chapters and 49 lessons, and every chapter points on to the practice that belongs to it.
Once you score 34 or more on several randomly drawn mock exams in a row, you are ready in practice. One good test can be luck; several in a row are not.

Yes. There is one theory test for all three classes. What separates them is the minimum age, the machine you may ride and the mandatory courses.
When can I sit the motorcycle theory test?
At the earliest six months before you reach the minimum age for the class: 16 for A1, 18 for A2 and 24 for A – or 20 for A once you have held A2 for two years.
Does access for the car also cover the motorcycle?
No. Car and motorcycle are two different tests with their own question bank and course, and access is bought for each of them.
