How the Norwegian theory test works – from booking to result

You sit the test at a Statens vegvesen traffic station, on a computer, in a room with others. Here is the whole run: what must be in place before you can book, what to bring, what happens in the room, and what happens afterwards.

When you can take it

At the earliest six months before you turn 18 – so from seventeen and a half. Before you can book, your application for a licence must be approved on Din side at Statens vegvesen, and your criminal record checked. The application includes a self-declaration of health; if a medical or eyesight certificate is needed, you are told.

You do not need to have finished driver training to sit the theory, and many take it early. But remember: a pass is valid for three years, and the practical test must be passed within that time.

Booking and the fee

You book an appointment on Din side once the application is approved, and choose the traffic station yourself. The theory-test fee is NOK 480 per attempt (Statens vegvesen prices from 1 February 2026). If you need to cancel, do it on Din side – check the deadline there, it decides whether the fee is refunded.

For comparison, the practical test for class B costs NOK 1,490 paid online, and the licence card itself NOK 160 online. So the theory is the cheap part to fail – but two weeks is not cheap if you have a driving test booked.

Test day

Bring valid ID. You take the photo for your licence in a photo booth at the station; it costs NOK 100. Then you sit in a room with others and answer on a computer.

Class B: 45 questions in 90 minutes, and 38 correct to pass – so seven wrong is your margin. You can move back and forth and change answers until time runs out. A dictionary is allowed; other aids are not. The test is offered in Norwegian and in North Sámi, English, Arabic, Sorani and Turkish.

The result, and if you fail

The result appears on screen the moment you submit, and you get a written summary. A pass is valid for three years.

If you fail, you must wait two weeks before you can take a new test, and you pay the fee again. There is no upper limit on attempts. Use the two weeks on the themes you missed – why people fail explains what to look for, and the two-week plan is built for exactly that window.

How long do I have to wait if I fail?
