The vehicle on the theory test
Not mechanics, but responsibility: the test asks what you are expected to check yourself, what the warning lamps mean, and how tyres, brakes and lights affect what the car does when you need it.
What the test asks
The daily check you are expected to do: lights, tyres, brakes, steering, visibility. Tread depth – the minimum, and why winter tyres need more. Tyre pressure and what the wrong pressure does to wear and grip. What happens when a wheel locks, and what ABS changes about how you brake.
Warning lamps are asked about by colour, not symbol: red means stop, amber means check soon. And light use – dipped, main beam, daytime running lights, fog lights – which you use when, and which you dip from.

The traps
Mixing up the two tread depths. The minimum is 1.6 mm on summer tyres and 3 mm on winter tyres – and the test likes to offer both numbers, in the opposite context. Likewise ABS: it does not shorten the braking distance on every surface, it lets you steer while braking.
And believing driver assistance takes over responsibility. Cruise control, blind-spot warning and emergency braking help, but the driver is responsible for the driving whatever the system did or did not do.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum legal tread depth?
1.6 mm on summer tyres. On winter roads, winter tyres with at least 3 mm of tread are required – studded or not. The tread is a drainage channel; worn down, the tyre rides on top of the water.
What does a red warning lamp mean?
Stop as soon as it is safe. Red warns of a fault that can be dangerous or damage the car – oil pressure, brakes, engine temperature. Amber means something should be checked soon, but you can normally drive on.
Does ABS give a shorter braking distance?
Not necessarily. ABS stops the wheels locking, so you can steer while braking fully. On loose surfaces the distance can be slightly longer. The point is control, not length.
